Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property (SICIP) at Tongji University is dedicated to nurturing top-tier talents in the field of intellectual property, equipped with an international perspective and exceptional capabilities. Our mission is to empower students worldwide in intellectual property research, management, and protection, fostering global cooperation and innovation development in intellectual property. Through these efforts, we aim to make meaningful contributions to societal advancement. Doctoral studies consist of courses selected for the individual in consultation with a faculty guidance committee and successful completion of an independent research culminating in a thesis. The educating activities are conducted in English.

The SICIP offers Ph.D. programs in four areas:

l International Governance of Intellectual Property

Program Duration

The regular duration of the Ph.D. program is four years, while the maximum duration is seven years.

From the beginning of the 5th year, the rules and regulations concerning the extension of the University and the College shall apply.

Dissertation

Graduate students are required to complete their dissertations independently, under the guidance of their advisors.

Research Papers

During the Ph.D. period, doctoral students shall have academic publications that are, in principle, related to the research topic of the dissertation; the publications shall meet the requirements of Tongji University's Regulations on the Standards for Doctoral and Master's Degrees and on the Academic Publications of Candidates.

Credit

Ph.D. students must complete at least 19 credits, which include four credits from public degree courses, four credits from professional degree courses, two credits for non-degree courses (including at least one inter-college or interdisciplinary course of 2 credits), and 9credits for the compulsory courses (including one credit for dissertation topic selection, two credit for graduate student academic behavior norms, two credits for the Tongji advanced lectures, three credits for the mid-term evaluation, and one credit for the academic report conference on the achievement of dissertation phase.


Eligible Applicants

l Non-Chinese citizens in good health;

l Applicants for a doctorate program in China must have a master's degree. Scholarship students must be 40 or under and self-supporting students must be 50 or under.


Qualified Applicants

l hold a non-Chinese passport for at least four years and have lived outside of China for at least two years;

l have received a masters degree from an accredited institution or recognized equivalent;

l have sufficient undergraduate education for doctoral study in the chosen field;

l stay in good academic standing, a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 5.0 scale;

l demonstrate English proficiency through a valid record of either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), only if the applicant is from non-English-speaking countries. A valid TOEFL score is 90 (120 scale) or higher on the internet-based test for a graduate admission, while a valid overall Band score of IELTS is 6.5 or higher on a 9-point scale. TOEFL or IELTS can be waived for those whose education environment is English or the contact advisor at Tongji University strongly acknowledges his/her English proficiency.


Application

This discipline awards Ph.D. Degree in Law or Management according to the subjects the students selected.
