On September 16, 2025, the 2025 Orientation Ceremony for New Students of Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property was successfully held, together with the opening ceremony of the WIPO-Tongji University Joint Master's Program in Intellectual Property and the Chinese Government "Belt and Road" Master's Program in Intellectual Property. A total of 130 new students enrolled in the new academic year, further expanding the student size and educational influence of the college. Notably, the first cohort of 46 professional degree postgraduate students in intellectual property and the first 5 international doctoral students officially enrolled.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Victor Owade, Consellor of Academic Institions Executive Program at WIPO Academy; Mr. Yu Chen, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration; Professor Lei Xinghui, Deputy Director of the National Steering Committee for Professional Degree Postgraduate Education in Intellectual Property and Deputy Director of Tongji University Council; and representatives from the Higher Education Division of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. The ceremony was presided over by Dang Jianwei, Acting Executive Dean of Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property.

Mr. Victor Owade pointed out that the 9th WIPO-Tongji Joint Master’s Program in Intellectual Property had recently been officially launched in Shanghai, aiming to cultivate professionals to address global intellectual property challenges. He emphasized that despite uncertainties in the international environment, innovation and intellectual property cooperation remained an important driving force for development. Amid continuous growth in global intellectual property applications and rapid changes in digital technologies, the program would help students master cutting-edge knowledge, cross disciplinary boundaries, and support grassroots innovators in using intellectual property to promote economic and social development. He fully affirmed the cooperative achievements with all parties and expected students to make positive contributions to the global intellectual property ecosystem.
Mr. Yu Chen, Deputy Director-General, Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration
On behalf of Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, Mr. Yu Chen welcomed the new students of the 2025 intellectual property master’s programs and thanked all partners for their support. He noted that Shanghai focused on building international capacity, aligned with the highest international standards, actively developed an intellectual property talent training system, and supported Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property in deepening cooperation with WIPO and world-renowned universities to jointly cultivate professionals with international vision and practical experience. A large number of intellectual property talents had started their careers in Shanghai and made important contributions to the development of intellectual property undertakings across China and even globally. He hoped that the college would cultivate more high-level interdisciplinary talents with science and engineering backgrounds, professional knowledge, international vision, and competence in international affairs, providing solid talent support for Shanghai’s intellectual property development.

Professor Lei Xinghui expressed his delight in witnessing the enrollment of new students of Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property together with teachers and students, and thanked all parties for their support. He stated that the college welcomed the first cohort of professional master's students in intellectual property this year, marking an important step in national postgraduate education in intellectual property. Next year would mark the 10th anniversary of cooperation with WIPO and the founding of the college. The college would continue to deepen cooperation and serve the national intellectual property strategy. He encouraged students to cherish their time, broaden their horizons, bravely undertake their missions, and strive to become explorers and strivers in the new era.

The representative from the Higher Education Division of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission extended congratulations and welcome to the 2025 new students of Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property, Tongji University, and thanked all parties for their support. Shanghai was deepening education reform, expanding high-quality educational resources, enhancing innovation and service capabilities, and accelerating the construction of a high-quality education system. The municipal education commission attached great importance to the development of the college, supported it in introducing top faculty, deepening international cooperation, and cultivating intellectual property talents with global competitiveness to serve Shanghai's development as a strong intellectual property city and its "Five Centers" initiative. He hoped that students would cherish their time, devote themselves to research, grow into outstanding talents proficient in international rules and capable of handling cross-border intellectual property affairs, and expected the college to continue innovating mechanisms and expanding cooperation to support intellectual property governance in China and countries along the Belt and Road.

Prior to the orientation week,centering on the talent training goal of"international,high-level and interdisciplinary talents",guided by students'development needs,and combining the college’s disciplinary characteristics and educational traditions,the college formed a"Four Integrations" postgraduate new student education model,namely integrating ideological guidance and organizational development,academic navigation and resource empowerment,cultural immersion and peer interaction,as well as centralized services and class-based guidance.This model comprehensively improved the systematicness,standardization and effectiveness of orientation education,helping new students quickly adapt to the environment,enhance their sense of belonging and identity,and clarify their development paths.It not only strengthened new students’institutional and cultural identity,but also laid a solid foundation for research integrity and academic norms.
