Tongji University was Granted the First Authorized Doctoral Degree in Intellectual Property Interdisciplinary Program in China

On July 12th, 2022, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee issued the “Notice on the List of Academic Degree Authorizing Sites to be Revoked or Added by Autonomous Degree Authorizing Units in 2021 Issued by State Council Academic Degrees Committee”. Adopted by the 37th meeting of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, Tongji University has added an interdisciplinary doctoral degree program in intellectual property.

 The addition of this degree program is to implement the “Outlines for Building a Powerful Intellectual Property Country (2021-2035)”, which requires to focus on the main disciplines of fundamental intellectual property theory, intellectual property jurisprudence, intellectual property operation, intellectual property international governance, etc. In order to response to the needs of human resource for intellectual property arising from the new round of technological revolution, industrial revolution and China’s deep participation in the global governance of intellectual property, efforts should be made to cultivate high-end compound talents with technical background, proficiency in management and law, capability of international dialogue, and competence for theoretical research and practice of the interdisciplinary subject of intellectual property. This program awards a doctorate degree in law or management.

 With the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the SICIP will take the construction of the interdisciplinary subject of intellectual property as an opportunity. The SICIP will further strengthen the integration of teaching and research in related disciplines, including law, economics, management, life sciences, artificial intelligence, and design. The college aims to gather well-known experts and potential young scholars prominent in intellectual property domestically and internationally. The SICIP will also explore the best paradigm and path for the construction and development of intellectual property in China and strive to build a world-class intellectual property college with Chinese characteristics.
