On January 30, 2018, Tongji University SICIP and D&I jointlyinvited Prof. Dr. Kostas Terzidis, Organic Parking, Inc CEO (former associateProfessor at Harvard University), to give a lecture for the students of theWIPO-Tongji MIP in Design, on the topic of theDigital Design Culture in the Development of Design Industries.. It’s part of Seminar onInnovation and Design, which is one of core courses of the Program.
The latest designconcept was introduced to the students by Prof.Kostas Terzidis
Prof.Dr. Kostas started with introducing the technologicaladvances in the development of design industry evolution history, from the hand drawing to CAD and Auto-CAD,as well as thelatest software technology such as FormZ in the field of design creativity. Itadmitted technologicaladvances are playing an increasingly important role in the design industries, whichis followed by the new understanding and definition of a new form of designindustries and their legal attributes. The lecture proposed many technical andlegal issues to discuss, such as can design be replaced by software? Shouldsoftware developers be responsible for software misuse? Is it possible to change the subjectof intellectual property? Is machine design possible? Professor explainedprofound theories in simple language and fascinating way while students listened attentively and respondedenthusiastically. Thelively atmosphere of interactive classes between professor and students fullyembodied the charm of interdisciplinary courses: combination of liberal art and sciences, spark generated by brainstorming.

As one of corecourses of WIPO-Tongji MIP in Design, the Seminar on Innovation and Design hasbeen jointly developed by the SICIP and D&I. The partners cooperate veryclosely, take the inter-discipline and shaping of international high-end courseas orientation, integratelaw and technology with the main content of creativity and protection, andjointly design courseware and academic exam. Besides the theoretical studyduring the classes and the design workshop Seminar, this course will alsorequire students take training of Hands-on ability in the Phillip DesignShanghai on site, the company visit will definitely provide students a betterunderstanding of design and innovation.
