September the 18^th, 2018, The Orientation Ceremony for New Students of Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property was successfully held at Room 1004, Zhonghe Building by SICIP. The following senior officials were invited to participate in the ceremony, they are Mr. Joe Bradley, the Head of Academic Institutions Program, WIPO Academy, Ms. Marta Chikowore, Counsellor of Academic Institutions Program, WIPO Academy, Mr. Chengrui Yang, Head of International Cooperation Department, National Intellectual Property Administration, Mr. Xiaoye Ji, Deputy Director of Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, and Professor Xinghui Lei, Vice President of Tongji University. 48 students from 17 countries participated in the ceremony. Mr. Jianchang Li, Chairman of College Council, SICIP, moderated the ceremony.

The Chinese student delegate of WIPO programme, Mr. He Yicheng and the international student delegate of The Belt and Road programme, Ms. Aikaterini Kanellia all expressed their gratitude towards the superior teaching resources of the college and their expectation of the future study.

Vice President Xinghui Lei,on behalf of Tongji University, sent welcome and congratulations to all the new students of 2018 of SICIP. Then he introduced the development and history of the IP subject in Tongji University. Early in 2003, Tongji University has already planned establishing the College of Intellectual Property. In order to further implement the strategy of China building the powerful country in IP, and to support the strategy of Shanghai constructing the global influential science innovation center and Asia-Pacific IP center.

Mr. Chengrui Yang sent his best wishes to all the students, hoping that every student could cherish the opportunity to study in SICIP, Tongji University, and make full use of the teaching platform and resources. He also hoped international students can meet the hidden Chinese culture in the city Shanghai beside study. In the end he made an interpretation of the word “Tongji”. That is: the “tong” means to collaborate, and “ji” means to overcome the difficulties and achieve the common goals, so is to wish SICIP could join together and create the bright future.

Deputy Director Xiaoye, Ji hoped that under the guidance of WIPO and CNIPA, and with the support of Tongji University, SICIP could benchmark the international first-class standard, further concentrate fine resources, improve the school-running pattern, optimize the curriculum, expedite the construction of worldwide influential platform for IP talents and high-end think tank, and finally make new contributions to serving and supporting the The Belt and Road proposal, building China an innovation-originated country and making Shanghai a remarkable global city.

Deputy Dean Professor Yu tried to interpret SICIP from an innovative perspective. S is special, I is inter-disciplinary,  C is creative, I is international,  and P is platform .

Professor Mingde Li put forward three important aspects of doing IP research. First, it is crucial to learn about the international treaties and regulations of IP, because they are the foundation stone. Second is to focus on technological development as IP is closely concerned with innovation so the progress in technology will promote the development of IP protection. The third is that IP rights become increasingly important in international market competition today. As a newborn product of market economy, IP protection will play a significant role in future market competition.

The Chinese student delegate of WIPO programme, Mr. He Yicheng and the international student delegate of The Belt and Road programme, Ms. Aikaterini Kanellia all expressed their gratitude towards the superior teaching resources of the college and their expectation of the future study.

Tongji University is the only domestic university which cooperates with WIPO under the joint master program, and the only department which undertakes the master program from Ministry of Education and CNIPA on The Belt and Road Chinese government IP scholarship, and through filing at the Office of Academic Degree of State Council, SICIP successfully instituted its inter-disciplinary doctoral program. Holding world-class teaching resources in IP field, SICIP is committed to build the world-class cultivation platform for IP talents, IP science research center, and IP think tank. At present, SICIP has soon become one of the successful models of domestic internationalized schooling on IP subject.
